On December 23, 2010, Thursday, Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov cut the ribbon on the new wastewater  treatment plant effluent of Svilosa with which it was officially put into operation. This coincided with the celebration of 45 anniversary of establishment and the launch of the second major facility, the last stage of the renovation of main production facilities - 12 MW turbine for a "green" cogeneration.
Other official guests were the Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism - Traycho Traykov, Governor of Veliko Tarnovo - Pencho Penchev, RIEW Director - Elena Grigorova, Mayor of Svishtov - Stanislav Blagov. The event was attended by representatives of the Board of Directors of Svilosa: Krassimir Dachev - Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mihail Kolchev - Executive Director, and Jordan Gaidarov and Victor Zarev - Executive Directors of Svilocell.
At the ceremony, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov congratulated Svilosa for successful production and export of bleached kraft pulp in over 10 countries in Europe, Middle East, Egypt, China. The Prime Minister concluded that thanks to companies such as Svilosa the Bulgarian economy is developing successfully and the country is going out of the economic crisis. CEO of Svilosa, Mihail Kolchev, added that the success of the "green" company (the first in Southeast Europe, concluded a contract with the World Bank for sale of carbon) is primarily due to the staff.

Turbine for a "Green" Cogeneration
The turbine for a "green" cogeneration - for obtaining electric and thermal energy, is "clean" in terms of negative effects on the environment. The tturbine for green cogeneration is powered by steam from sodokotel - a facility that uses as fuel a liquor obtained after boiling the wasted biomass. It  consists of wood waste (sawdust, bark) from wood processing. With this technology it is achieved environmentally friendly production of electricity and it is improved the resource base of the optimal use of energy and the associated relatively low emissions of exhaust gases - greenhouse gas CO2 has been reduced. Green energy if attributed to spared emissions the positive effect is almost 100%. The more CO2 is absorbed by biomass, the more CO2 is released into the atmosphere. Energy from waste wood (waste biomass) has the environmental advantage that it reduces air pollution. The biomass reduces air pollution and being part of the carbon cycle it reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 90% compared to fossil fuels. Emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other contaminants are considerably smaller. And the use of wood waste for biomass energy means that pollution is almost zero. With cogeneration it is achieved simultaneously generation of electricity and heat (steam). Therefore the company uses steam for its own needs and reduces purchased from outside electricity. Reduced greenhouse gas emissions could be traded and could generate revenue  through the Mechanism "Joint Implementation" of the Kyoto Protocol.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent WTPE keeps the ecological balance in nature. Storage and water treatment is vital for the survival of life on earth. WTPE in Sviloza AD is one of the ways in which wastewater  is being treated to be carried out by maintaining the ecological balance in the biosphere. Effluents that are discharged into the environment would destroy the habitats of many species of animals and plants for a very short time if they don't get treated in the WTPE and transformed into a condition in which pollutants are reduced below a certain minimum limits. In Sviloza the use of hazardous chemicals in manufacturing process is very limited. Even chlorine isn't been used in the bleaching process. This eliminates the formation of dangerous chlorine compounds and prevents the formation of organic halogens in wastewater discharged into the Danube. The influence of wastewaters is negligible also because the river is deep and provides a very good coefficient of discharge of wastewater and good ecological capacity of the transmission.
